Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) will host the Super Eight tennis tournament at Harare Sports Club starting on Friday to prepare local junior tennis players scheduled to take part in the African Junior Championships (AJC) in Cairo, Egypt, next month. The AJC will take place from April 3-14.
Zimbabwe will be fielding six players in Egypt namely, Courtney Lock and Alwyn Mushonga (Under-16 boys), Tadiwa Chinamo and Keith Mwashita (Under-14 boys), Karen Muswere and Karen Machisa (Under-14 girls).
Cliff Nhokwara, a TZ official told NewsDay Sport the tournament would give players scheduled to take part in the African Junior Championships a chance to assess their preparedness.
“The Super Eight tournament will run from Friday up until Sunday. It will feature the top eight players in the Under-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18 age groups in both the boys’ and girls’ categories. We have organised this tournament to prepare our players who will be competing at the AJC in Egypt.
“Besides being a preparatory tournament, it’s also part of our development programme to expose our young players to regular competition,” said Nhokwara.
Meanwhile, local Under-18 players were struggling to assert their dominance at the International Tennis Federation/Confederation of African Tennis (ITF/CAT) African Closed Junior 18 and Under Championships currently underway in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
In the boys’ section Taremeredzwa Mariga suffered straight sets defeat to South African opponents in the first round on Monday.
Lock progressed to the second round after winning his first round match against Innocent Tidimane of Botswana 6-2, 6-1.
