Giants Basketball Club’s unbeaten run came to a halt when they suffered their first defeat of the season with a narrow 31-28 loss to Highlanders in a Southern Region Basketball League women’s encounter at Bulawayo Club for the Disabled on Friday.

Highlanders were inspired to victory by Jacqueline Phenduka who got nine points, while her teammate Pretty Tinarwo scored eight.

On the other hand, Geraldine Chibonda had a good game as she got 10 points while Charmaine Chirinda got eight points despite being on the losing side. Giants have 17 points, while Highlanders have collected 13 points in nine games.

In another game played in the women’s section, Lakers garnered maximum points after their opponents National University of Science and Technology (Nust) failed to turn up on Saturday.

In the men’s category, ZB Titans continued to struggle as they lost 61-34 to Kings on Friday.

Titans have lost 17 games, only won once and are second from the bottom of the log with 19 points.

Kings are on position five with 30 points with the same number of games. Stars beat Oilers 66-64 to wrap up Friday’s activities in the league.

On Saturday, Highlanders surged to the top of the log in the men’s section after they were awarded a 20-0 scoreline after 6ers failed to pitch up.

Highlanders have 35 points from 19 games, but know that their stay at the top of the log may be short-lived as Unicorns, who were inactive, trail by a point and have a game in hand.

Abundant Life Christian Centre (ALCC) beat Giants 70-60 on Saturday. Despite the loss, Giants maintained their stay on position three on the log with 31 points from 19 matches, while ALCC remained on position four with 30 points.

In other matches that were played on Saturday, Midlands State University got the better of Nust winning 57-52 in their first game before they ended losing 81-73 to Kings in the second game.
