LUPANE — A 69-year-old man from Gudubhu village was yesterday convicted on charges of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl each time the minor passed through his home on her way to school.

The court heard on several occasions between December last year and January this year, the man would intercept the girl, fondle and suckle her breasts.

The girl is in Grade Five at a school in the same village.

The matter only came to light after her teacher quizzed her on coming late for school.

She claimed she had resorted to using a longer route to school to avoid being abused by the man. The matter was then reported to the police, leading to the villager’s arrest.

Lupane resident magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba remanded the man out of custody to next Tuesday for sentence.

Sanders Sibanda prosecuted.
