A 74-year-old Mutasa man in Manicaland committed suicide by hanging at his homestead after testing positive for HIV last week.

The incident took place last Thursday in Ngwende village, Chief Mutasa, in Honde Valley.

It is reported on the fateful day Victor Nyambuya looked confused and had lost hope of surviving following his HIV status.

It was said he looked disturbed though none of his family members thought he would take his own life.Police confirmed the incident saying it is unfortunate that people opt to commit suicide over a condition that is “now manageable”.

On the night of March 15 Nyambuya is said to have disappeared into a nearby bush without anyone noticing. He did not return, prompting his family to conduct a search.

The following morning Nyambuya was seen hanging from a tree just 100 metres away from his homestead by his son Wiseman who then alerted other villagers.

The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene and retrieved the body from the tree. No post-mortem was conducted as no foul play was suspected.

However, acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Enock Chishiri urged the public to seek professional counselling in sensitive matters before unnecessarily taking their lives.
