Bulawayo Metropolitan Province will tonight honour its athletes who excelled in various sporting disciplines last year.

Former Warriors striker Agent Sawu will be the guest of honour at the event to be held at the Bulawayo Polytechnic College.

The athletes participated in football, netball, handball, tennis, boxing, athletics and volleyball while others participated in activities for people living with disabilities — including football for the hearing impaired and intellectually challenged, netball for the hearing impaired, wheelchair basketball, tennis and goalball, among others.

The athletes represented Bulawayo at the Zimbabwe National Youth Games staged in Gwanda, National Paralympic Games in Chinhoyi as well as the Youth Education through Sport (YES) Games which were hosted by Bindura.

Sports and Recreation Commission co-ordinator for Bulawayo Sam Dzvimbu yesterday told NewsDay Sport: “We want to honour athletes who excelled while donning the Bulawayo colours last year. Athletes who received gold, silver and bronze medals during the Zimbabwe National Paralympic Games, National YES will all be honoured,” Dzvimbu said.

The occasion will be graced by Bulawayo Metropolitan Province governor and resident minister Cain Mathema.

“The governor of Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Ambassador Cain Mathema, who is the patron of the Games, will attend. Agent Sawu is the guest of honour,” Dzvimbu said.

The major sponsors of the event include Delta Beverages, Shield Security, Road Motor Services, Dickies Restaurant and Bellevue Spar who have also been assisted by the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture.

“We will be honouring 214 athletes. This is going to assist in inspiring other athletes to come and represent Bulawayo in the Games as well as encourage parents to allow their children to participate in sports. This will also motivate them to perform well in the Paralympic Games next month. Our total package for hosting the event is $10 000,” Dzvimbu said.
