Six members of the same family perished in a horrific accident just 20km out of Kwekwe along the Harare Highway on Sunday evening.

Police confirmed the horrendous accident involving a Mazda B2200 vehicle which belonged to the Zimbabwe National Army 5 HQ Brigade. The truck was being driven by one of the deceased family members only identified as Tendai Nyamapfeni.

Police said the driver of the army truck lost control of the vehicle and encroached into the path of an oncoming Scania Omnibus, resulting in a head-on collision. According to the police, at the point of impact, the canopy on the Mazda flew off and landed on a Toyota Ipsum behind the vehicle.

Five people who were in the Mazda died on the spot, including a three-month old baby, while the other died yesterday morning at Kwekwe General Hospital.

Four others, who are members of the Nyamapfeni family were yesterday still hospitalised and reported to be in serious conditions.

Police have identified three of those in hospital as Willia Nyoni, Sencier and Thanks Nyamapfeni. The other five are yet to be identified.
