Five journalists on Friday escaped unhurt after a vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road, rolled and landed in a maize field in Chikomba.

The journalists managed to proceed to the venue of the rally addressed by party leader Welshman Ncube and attended by thousands of party supporters.

Ncube told the gathering that it was sad people were involved in avoidable accidents due to poor roads in both rural and urban areas, saying the government should work towards addressing that and avoid accidents.

The driver of the vehicle, a Mitshubishi Pajero, failed to negotiate a sharp curve, leading to the accident. Meanwhile, an exiled Gambian journalist claimed she was deported from Zimbabwe because she was wanted in her home country for sedition and treason charges.

Ndey Sosseh, the former president of the Gambia Press Union, who is exiled in Mali, said she had travelled for a one-day conference, but was denied entry at the Harare International Airport last week.

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh is considered to be one of the worst dictators in Africa and his regime has thrown a number of journalists into jail for treason.
