Peter Dube is the new Highlanders Football Club chairman.

Dube, a former club secretary, beat outgoing chairman Themba Ndlela by 41 votes in elections that attracted 353 voters — quite an improved number in the electorate than the previous poll that had seen less than 200 members voting.

Dube garnered 184 votes, shrugging off the challenge from Ndlela, who collected 143, with one spoilt paper. Another contestant, Bulawayo businessman Mandla Moyo, who lost to Ndlela in 2009, got a meagre 23 votes.

Dube was ecstatic about winning the Bosso chairmanship, but said the trick was to work together as the Highlanders family for the team to move forward.

“I do not have much to say. In my leadership, we will strive to embrace everyone. No one is going to be left out,” said an elated Dube. Dube was Highlanders secretary under Roger Muhlwa, who led the club from 1994 to 1996 and 1998 to 2000.

In 2009, he was nominated together with Elkanah Dube, Mgcini Nkolomi and Justice Nicholas Mathonsi to the board of directors, but he, however, turned down the nomination.

Andrew Tapela retained the executive secretary’s post as he earned 153 votes, narrowly beating former team medic and manager Emmett Ndlovu by six votes. Ndlovu got 147 with another city businessman Donald Ndebele getting 55 votes.

Charles “Six-One” Moyo is new executive committee member after he amassed 130 votes with outgoing Wisdom Mabhena close with 122 while Dumisani Mabhena got 99 votes.

Dube, Tapela and Moyo were duly elected new chairman, secretary and committee member as announced by board member Luke Mnkandla, who was overseeing the elections with the help of the other board members.

Mnkandla said there was a “slight anomaly” in the voting as it appeared two voters had been given more ballot papers for the post of executive secretary and there were two less for the chairman’s post, but they had agreed with the candidates’ agents to go on as those votes were of no consequence.
