Mines and Mining Development Minister, Obert Mpofu is set to host a lavish birthday and graduation party at his Nyamandlovu home this Saturday where 4 000 guests are expected.

According to a source in the family, the Mpofu family is expected to slaughter cattle, chickens, goats and sheep.

The politician — a Zanu PF politburo member who comes from one of the country’s most underdeveloped provinces — is on record as having declared he was one of the wealthiest people in government and the leading cattle rancher in Matabeleland North Province.

In an interview with NewsDay yesterday, his wife Sikhanyisiwe Mpofu said the bash would be “two-pronged”.

“The minister is celebrating his 60th birthday as well as his conferment of a doctorate.”

She said four cattle and 2 000 chickens would be slaughtered for the guests. Also on the menu would be goat and sheep meat.

“We will get all the meat from our farms,” Sikhanyisiwe said.

“We will not buy any meat. As I speak to you, I am waiting for delivery of the chickens.”

She said: “People in the constituency should come in their numbers and celebrate with us.”

Vice-President John Nkomo is expected to grace the occasion, as well as some Cabinet ministers and the vice-chancellors of the country’s State universities.

Mpofu, who recently declared himself President Robert Mugabe’s “most obedient son”, recently graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Policy Studies from the Zimbabwe Open University.

“He has been an inspiration to his colleagues in government as well as our children because of what he has achieved.

“That is the reason why we have to celebrate,” she said.

Afro-jazz artist Jeys Marabini, jazz outfit Cool Crooners, Bob Nyabinde as well as Chase Skuza and Ndolwane Super Sounds have been lined up to entertain guests. Local disc jockeys will complete the entertainment line-up.
