Fifteen people were seriously injured after vehicles they were travelling in collided head on at the 25km peg along the Chiendambuya-Headlands road on Sunday.

The accident occurred after the driver of a Mazda Bongo truck, Rodrick Madamombe, who was ferrying seven passengers, reportedly encroached onto the right lane and collided with an oncoming Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus with eight passengers on board.

Madamombe was also injured in the mishap. Police confirmed the accident and advised road users to observe regulations.

“Madamombe was driving on the right side of the road when he approached the 25km peg on the mentioned road.

“He noticed an oncoming kombi which was carrying eight passengers, but by the time he tried to swing back to his lane, he could not avoid colliding with the Toyota Hiace,” Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Leonard Chabata said.

The injured passengers were rushed to Rusape General Hospital.

Chabata urged drivers to take due care when driving especially during this time when schools are opening, saying the volume of traffic on roads was high.

“There is a lot of traffic on the roads because of schools opening.”

“Drivers must be guided by road regulations so that we avoid unnecessary accidents as children return to school,” he added.
