In an incident that has left Chipinge villagers shell-shocked, a tipsy 21-year-old man committed suicide allegedly fearing imprisonment after assaulting his sister and mother over a marriage misunderstanding involving his other teenage sister.

Tangai Mushuwa (21) of Musikavanhu area in Chipinge committed suicide after his mother threatened to sue him over the assault.

It is alleged towards the end of last year, Mushuwa had been drinking before going home where he reportedly asked his 17-year-old sister, Tapera Mushuwa, why she could not get married.

Police in Manicaland yesterday confirmed the incident and urged people to desist from overreacting after taking alcohol.

“Tangai assaulted his sister several times with clenched fists while chiding her about what he called late marriage,” Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Leonard Chabata told NewsDay.

Following the assault, he said, Tangai’s mother, Margret Mushuwa (51), tried to intervene, but in vain.

The violent son then reportedly turned on his mother and assaulted her prompting other people to come to the two’s rescue.
