Bulawayo Metropolitan Province will be pinning hopes on three athletes who will represent the province in the Mr Pace Marathon 42,2km and 5km fun run in Harare tomorrow.

Mr Pace Marathon has a total prize money of $2 660.

Tariraishe Gumbi from Zimbabwe Prison Services and Sipho Ncube, an independent athlete, will participate in the 42,2 km race while Samson Muroyiwa of Bulawayo Club for the Disabled will compete in the 5km wheelchair category.

Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman Emmanuel Mpofu yesterday confirmed that the three athletes will battle it out in the race tomorrow.

“Gumbi, Ncube and Muroyiwa are our representatives this year. We expect that they will give the other athletes stiff challenge and come out as the top athletes in the race,” he said.

The race will begin from Harare Town House to Chitungwiza.

Organiser and founder of the race Collin Makaza said they are expecting a huge turnout from the athletes.

“We have registered 256 athletes to take part in the competition. Most top athletes in the country have confirmed their participation. The race is important because top athletes will qualify for the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon in South Africa next year,” he said.

Michael Ngaaseke, Monica Kativu and Precious Mukuzha are among the athletes who will be fighting for honours.
