FILABUSI — A 26-year-old habitual thief from Xalangab area under Chief Maduna in Filabusi was last week jailed eight years for housebreaking and theft.

Farai Nsiza was also found guilty of escaping from lawful custody when he appeared before Filabusi resident magistrate Shillah Nazombe who convicted him last Friday.

During his stealing escapades which started in March, Nsiza stole goods worth over $2 000 — and at one time escaped from police custody as he was being led to Filabusi Police Station.

Nsiza — who pleaded guilty to 12 counts of unlawful entry, theft and one of escaping from lawful custody — was sentenced to eight years in jail for twelve counts of unlawful entry and theft, and eight months for escaping from lawful custody.

The court heard that on March 31, Nsiza went to Bekezela Garikai houses in Filabusi where he broke into Kudakwashe Hove’s house and stole household goods worth $150.

On April 20, he broke into Harusiyi Machinda’s home and stole various items worth $1 794.

On October 20 he again broke into Emmanuel Ndlovu’s home at Mthwakazi Township while the owner was away and got away with property worth $90.

Six days later he forced his way into Siphilisiwe Msipha’s home where he stole property worth R1 800 while Msipha was sleeping in another room.

On November 7 Nsiza broke into Kennard Manana’s car and stole a car radio worth $150. On November 15 he also broke into Anele Moyo’s car at Mswela business centre and stole some goods worth $50.

Ten days later, Nsiza broke into Judith Tshuma’s home at Mthwakazi Township and stole goods worth $82. On the same day he also stole property worth $110 from Mandla Ndlovu’s car.

On November 18 members of the public instituted a citizen’s arrest on him and took him to Filabusi Police Station, but he bolted as they entered the premises. Nsiza was re-arrested on November 20 and property worth $2 078 was recovered from him.

Smart Tafireyi prosecuted.
