In-form Ignatius Mketekete will take his new-found confidence into the $25 000 Econet Joshua Nkomo Golf Classic which tees off this morning at Royal Harare Golf Club.

The 27-year-old professional, who comfortably leads the Golden Pilsener Order of Merit, will be bidding to claim his third consecutive victory on the Golden Pilsener Zambezi Tour.

Mketekete goes into this tournament on the back of two successive wins last month during the FSG Lowveld Pro-am in Triangle and Hippo Valley and the final leg of the NetOne Golf Series at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Course.

The absence of Tongoona Charamba in the field could act as a further confidence booster for Mketekete, but he will be well aware there are a number of other serious contenders.

For instance Robson Saurombe, who won the NetOne Leopard Rock Classic in September, Open Classic winner Shane Pringle and other local pros like Philip Tshuma, Ryan Cairns, and Rodgers Jack, will all be aiming to do well.

Wingate Park-based golfer Lyford Yadyo will also have some good memories from his last outing at Royal Harare after he beat Julius Kalimazeni in a play-off to win the Premier Auto Services invitational in June.

A total of 52 professional golfers including the country’s top female golfer Claire Minter, who will contest as an amateur in the pro-am events have entered the tournament.

The Econet Joshua Nkomo Classic is the result of a partnership between Econet Wireless and the Joshua Nkomo Memorial Fund.

Proceeds from some fund raising initiatives by Econet Wireless will be handed over to the Joshua Nkomo National Foundation to channel to various charities across the country.

The Joshua Nkomo National Foundation was founded in 1999 with the aim of perpetuating the legacy of the late Vice-President. It is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation registered under the laws of Zimbabwe.

“We are very excited about the Econet Joshua Nkomo Golf Classic. Given the positive response of golfers to news of the event, we are confident that it will be a great success,” Econet said in a statement.

The event will bring together top professional golfers, amateur golfers, as well as captains of industry and other prominent community leaders.
