A strong field is expected at this year’s 20 Miler road race set for early next month.

Harare Athletic Club (HAC), organisers of the annual 32km race, said they are expecting at least 500 athletes for this year’s edition which will be run on December 4.

Race director Marc Pozzo said: “The 20 Miler is by far the most important of all races in the Harare and national calendar and is HAC’s premier event. It is expected to attract the largest field of runners for a sponsored event this year with a field of up to 500 runners expected. Registration will be on Friday (tomorrow) prior to the event at Old Georgians Sports Club from 5pm and on Saturday.”

Pozzo said the race, which will be entering its 41st year, will start at the 13km peg on the Shamva Road, move into Glen Lorne and then to Old Georgians Sports Club.

Prominent long-distance athletes like Cuthbert Nyasango, Wirimai Zhuwawo, Kelvin Pangiso, Nkosiyazi Sibanda and Jonathan Chinyoka are expected to dominate the field on the men’s category. Pangiso is the defending champion while Sibanda won the race in 2010.

In the women’s section, seasoned campaigner Constantine Nyasango, sister to Cuthbert, who swept all the major long-distance races this year, will be looking to finish the year in style.
