Central African Building Society (CABS) could have lost $119 000 to its employee based at the Chipinge branch.
Police in Manicaland confirmed the incident and have launched a manhunt for the bank clerk Remember Muboko, who reportedly pocketed the money before disappearing.
Although details are still sketchy, it is understood on November 1 at around 4pm in Chipinge, CABS received $118 809,99 from CBZ Bank.
The manageress of the Chipinge branch, Catharine Makita allegedly stored the cash in a safe as they were about to knock off. This happened in full view of Muboko.
Both Makita and Muboko had a set of keys to the safe.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Leonard Chabata said: “After knocking off work at around 5 pm, the manageress left the branch without locking the main door.
The bank clerk Remember Muboko later got into the bank and because he had the keys to the safe, he is alleged to have taken $119 000 without anyone noticing and left.”
On November 2, when all other employees reported for work, the manageress was shocked to find all the money she had left in the safe gone.

As she was still in a state of shock, an unidentified person arrived at the bank with the keys saying he had been sent by Muboko to surrender the keys to her.
Makita immediately suspected Muboko had stolen the money as he had failed to turn up for work on that day without explanation.
His whereabouts are still unknown.
