A reckless driver who caused a fatal accident in Mutare this year by failing to obey a road sign, had his driver’s licence cancelled by Mutare magistrate Sharon Chipanga.

Tendekai Masamvu (25) was also fined $300 or 60 days in prison, following his conviction for contravening the Road Traffic Act.

The court heard on June 21, at the intersection of Park and Vumba roads, Masamvu failed to stop his car, a Nissan Sunny, leading to a collision with a Nissan Hardbody pick-up truck being driven by Eatwell Fiona.

One person died as a result of the crash while both vehicles were extensively damaged.

The State submitted that Masamvu drove negligently by failing to obey the regulatory stop sign and also that he failed to stop or react reasonably when an accident seemed imminent.

It also submitted Masamvu acted negligently by travelling at high speed under the circumstances.

In passing sentence, Chipanga said dangerous drivers should be banned from driving because they cause unnecessary accidents and loss of lives.

Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.
