The 2011 edition of the 21km Dr Simon Muzenda Memorial Gutu Half-marathon will focus on junior athletes who have been selected to take part in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics to be held in Spain, in July next year.

Enias Nhoro, the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director of competitions, said a strong contingent of junior athletes will be part of the Gutu Half-marathon, which is on today at Mupandawana Growth Point in Masvingo.

“All of our junior top athletes — a very strong pack in the junior category — will be here tomorrow. We did not have juniors in Binga last Saturday (Kujatana Nkubotu Peace Half-marathon). But they will be here because they have to pick up form and be seen. They have been shortlisted for the World Championships next year in July,” Nhoro said.

Some of the junior athletes are Thandiwe Nyathi of Matabeleland South, the Midlands duo of Faith Goremusandu and Sithulisiwe Zhou, Constance Chamboko and Jacob Mugomeri of Mashonaland West.

In the seniors category, top athletes who include the winner of the Kujatana Kumbotu race, Cuthbert Nyasango, are expected to be in Masvingo as well as Wirimai Zhuwao, Jonathan Chinyoka and Kevin Pangiso.
