A first half goal by Monomotapa striker Joseph Mutambiranwa condemned a battling Kiglon to the drop zone in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie at Gwanzura Stadium on Sunday.

After a five-match winless run, it was a welcome victory for the former league champions.

Taurai Mangwiro’s men went into Sunday’s match against the background of four defeats and one drawn game, but they finally bagged maximum points against a wasteful Kiglon yesterday to move to 10th position on the league table with 32 points from 27 matches.

That defeat dragged Kiglon further down to second position from the bottom of the league table with Shooting Stars jumping to third position from the basement following a brave 0-0 draw against defending champions and title contenders Motor Action.

But Kiglon, who had shown improved form in their last five matches in which they had won twice, drawn once and lost twice, will rue the chances they missed including a penalty towards the end of the first half.

Maxwell Jongwe’s men dominated the first half of the match but missed a host of chances before Mutambiranwa connected a free-kick from Russel Madamombe to give the former champions the lead.

At the stroke of the first half, Peter Muzondo was denied by Monoz goalkeeper Jorum Muchambo.

However, the balance of power shifted in the second half with Monomotapa taking control of the match, but they were also guilty of missing good chances.

Kiglon, however, had a good chance to level matters in the 84th minute after referee Batsirai Muchenje awarded them a penalty, but Muchambo saved the spot kick brilliantly.

Monomotapa could have also increased their lead after they were awarded a penalty at the stoke of full time with the referee adjudging that Mutambiranwa had been brought down in the box as he went for the kill after breaching the Kiglon defence.

But Makai Kawashu, who stepped up to take responsibility, watched his effort crash agonisingly against the crossbar.
