Secessionist party Mthakwazi Liberation Front (MLF) says it is investigating South African police for assaulting a Zimbabwean woman after she allegedly failed to produce her identification documents.

MLF spokesperson David Magagula said the incident could be the beginning of victimisation of undocumented Zimbabweans based in that country following reports South Africa planned to deport all illegal immigrants who have not regularised their stay.

The incident allegedly happened at the corner of Plein Street and Klein Street near MTN taxi rank in Johannesburg late last week.

But, South African Police Services (SAPS) Gauteng province spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said he was unaware of the incident.

“I am yet to get the details of such an incident and will be in a position to comment when I have the details,” he said.

Magagula told NewsDay in an interview they hoped in a few weeks’ time SAPS would have dealt with the officers.

“We have received shocking news that male members of SAPS assaulted our fellow female Mthwakazian for not producing her documents swiftly as per the officers’ expectations.”
