Zifa Northern Region Division One football league log leaders FC La Liga will be hoping to take another giant leap towards top-flight football when they visit One Commando to meet Black Rhinos on Saturday.

Rivals Highfield United meet DStv in Dzivarasekwa on Saturday.

La Liga consolidated their lead at the top of the log with a 1–0 win over Karoi United a fortnight ago, a result that was aided by a slump by nearest rivals Highfield United, Mwana Africa and Rhinos, who all drew their matches.

Only third-placed DStv have been very strong in the final lap managing to collect maximum points while dark horses Harare City also rekindled their hopes of snatching the title with a 2-1 win over Rhinos.

The log leaders are on 42 points, just two points ahead of second-placed Highfield, DStv Rangers and Mwana Africa, all tied at 40 points with only four rounds of games left to play.

Harare City and Rhinos are on fifth and sixth position with 39 and 37 points respectively. They complete the list of teams still harbouring ambitions of getting promoted at the end of the season.

FC La Liga manager Bothwell Mahlengwe yesterday said his team will try to maintain their cool heads as the race for promotion clearly reaches a sizzling point.

“When we started this team at the start of the season we didn’t expect to go this far. This team was formed from the Bankers’ league which is almost a social league and our objective before the season was to survive relegation, but here we are. We have achieved our objective and to be where we are at the moment is a great achievement.

“If we manage to win it, that will be a bonus, but if we fail to win it, fair and fine. We can always try next year.

“The fact that we have achieved our objective already means we will go into the remaining games with a free spirit, which is good for the team because we will not be under any pressure,” said Mahlengwe.
