A Bulawayo based youth organisation, the National Youth Development Trust (NYDT), will onThursday hold a peace convention aimed at engaging youths on peace-building and transformation issues.

The two-day peace convention, targeting youths in Matabeleland and running under the theme, Youths: Building Lasting Peace in Zimbabwe, will be held at the Academy of Music in Bulawayo.

The NYDT said the convention would engage youths on the root causes of conflict.

“NYDT is employing various ways of engaging young people on peace-building and conflict transformation, a move which has been necessitated by the realisation that youths are often a targeted group during conflict,” said the organisation.

“There is, therefore, a need to engage young people to establish the root causes of conflict in their respective areas and come up with solutions on conflict transformation.”

The NYDT said the convention would bring together over 200 youths. It is expected the youths would be able to draw strategies for use in peace-building and learn from other countries’ experiences to input to the national healing process.

Co-ministers in the Organ on National Healing in Zimbabwe, civic society leaders and political parties are expected to address the meeting.

One of the NYDT’s objectives is to provide youths with a practical understanding of democratic principles and practices so as to relate to electoral representation at local, central and international government levels.
