A 21-year-old Zengeza man escaped death by a whisker after he was brutally attacked by two robbers who gouged out his eye, crushed his teeth and left him for dead.

After attacking him, the robber, Brighton Marume, stripped Tinotenda Mukwacha naked, stole his clothes and cellphone before disappearing into the darkness.

Marume (38) was last week slapped with a four-year jail term by Chitungwiza magistrate Lazini Ncube after convicting him of viciously attacking Mukwacha and robbing him.

However, he will serve an effective three-year jail term after a year was suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The incident occurred on October 5 last year at around 6pm when Mukwacha was on his way to work on a night shift.

Mukwacha, who is employed by a bakery in Zengeza, was in the company of his friend, only identified in court papers as Talent, and his girlfriend, on the day in question.

When they got behind Chitungwiza General Hospital, Mukwacha parted ways with his friends as he proceeded to his work place along a different road.

He then met Marume who was in the company of an unidentified man travelling in the opposite direction. As Mukwacha stretched his hand to greet Marume who was known to him, Marume pulled the hand, grabbed him by the neck and pushed him to the ground.

The court heard Marume and his accomplice, who is still at large, bludgeoned Mukwacha with an iron bar all over the body.

Mukwacha lost his right eye and two front teeth in the attack.

Mukwacha was later assisted by a passer-by who ferried him to hospital where he regained consciousness.

The matter was reported to police and Mukwacha managed to identify Marume leading to his arrest.
