Former national soccer team stars are rallying behind the Warriors as they take on Liberia in the crunch Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Former strikers Adam Ndlovu, Agent Sawu and Zenzo Moyo, yesterday said Warriors coach Norman Mapeza had a cream of players who could carry the day for the nation against Liberia.

Ndlovu and Sawu were part of the Warriors team that travelled to Tunisia for the Afcon finals together with the legendary Peter Ndlovu and Wilfred Mugeyi, under celebrated mentor Sunday Chidzambwa, but fell in the group stage.

Moyo was part of the team which played the qualifiers to the Tunisia finals.

Ndlovu, now an assistant coach at Premiership side Chicken Inn, said despite the pressure to collect maximum points, nothing is impossible if the players remained focused.

“First of all discipline is needed and then they have to focus on what they want and that is to win and collect maximum points. If they have the right attitude, nothing is impossible. There is pressure, but they must remain focused. The players have been outstanding of late,” Ndlovu said.

He said despite the absence of lethal Germany-based Knowledge Musona, Mapeza still commanded a quality squad.

“The coach has a good squad. Of course Musona is injured, but nevertheless we still have a good team. There is no difference between the Dream Team and the boys who are playing now. All that is needed is support from all corners,” Ndlovu said.

Sawu said home advantage is the trump card and the way to go for the Warriors was to go into attack from the first whistle.

“We are playing at home and we have to win. From the word go we need to put the opponents on their back foot.

“It might not happen in the first minute. We might get the goal in the 89th minute, but we need to be behind the boys through and through,” Sawu said.

Moyo said he still felt the team needed inspiration in a player like former captain Benjani Mwaruwari.

“It will be difficult, but we have to rally behind the boys. We have a very good team, young men who are committed and can even beat Brazil if we rally behind them.

“Of course one thing that is missing is a tried and tested player like Benji to give the boys inspiration, but they must be ready to die for the country,” Moyo said.

The three strikers were part of the first Zimbabwe national team to reach the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
