Masvingo’s participation in the annual youth games to be held in Gwanda is hanging in the balance amid a gloomy picture of under-funding.

Masvingo are former hosts and winners of the games.

The province is failing to raise affiliation fees.

Gwanda hosts the games this year from August 14-21 under the theme, “The role of sport in building the nation”.

Masvingo team goes into camp today, but there are indications of food shortages although few pledges were made by the business sector and a few individuals.

Masvingo Youth Games Association manager of marketing and publicity Benias Tirivaviri said the business community and well wishers should chip in to donate in cash or kind if the Masvingo team — comprising 255 participants — are to contest the games this year.

Affiliation fees is $45 per individual.

“As it stands, things are really bad. We have failed to raise enough affiliation fees and we are going in camp today yet we only got a few pledges of food. We are calling on the corporate world to assist us to avoid the kids starving in camp, as well as to raise money for affiliation fees. If everyone in Masvingo contributes a single rand, it will be sufficient to overcome our challenges.

“The business community should understand the importance of sport considering we are contesting in all categories including games for the physically challenged. Other provinces are fully supported and it will be us alone in the cold,” Tirivaviri added.
