A suspected beer-drinking binge ended tragically after six people were involved in a fatal accident in Mutare over the weekend.

The accident occurred at Hospital Hill along the Mutare-Harare Road on Friday night.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Leonard Chabata said two cars — a Toyota Chaser and Mercedes Benz — were involved in a head-on collision, killing six people, three of them employees of Premier Medical Services.

“According to information that we have, Trust Masocha (28) was driving a Toyota Chaser towards Christmas Pass in Mutare with three other occupants employed by Premier Medical Services,” Chabata said.

“Godknows Muramba (26) was driving a Benz with five people on board.

“He encroached into the lane of the oncoming Chaser resulting in a head-on collision.”

Simbarashe Shoko (24), who was in the Chaser, died on the spot while Don Chibinya (23) and Masocha died on admission at Mutare Provincial Hospital.

Survivors from both cars were rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital where three others later succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.

Police said both vehicles were damaged beyond repair.

They said the victims are believed to have been coming from a beer-drinking binge and speeding.

Chabata said investigations were still in progress, but appealed to motorists to desist from drinking and driving to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
