The 16th edition of Mine Entra kicked off Tuesday at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) grounds in Bulawayo amid optimism current economic recovery has increased chances of local companies clinching deals at the event.

Local and foreign exhibitors were yesterday putting final touches to their stands.

The three-day exhibition is being held under the theme “Exploring Business Synergies in Mining, Engineering and Transport”.

South African firms expressed enthusiasm at taking part in the exhibition and said they were hopeful of clinching deals with local companies.

“Zimbabwe’s mining sector has vast potential for expansion, but availibity of machinery is drawing it back. Our participation here is to showcase various equipment that is suitable for local mines,” said an exhibitor who specialises in supply of excavators, graders, loaders, conveyors and commercial vehicles.

He said, last year they managed to conclude “meaningful deals with small-scale miners”. Equipment on display under the exploration category includes blasting devices, drilling, breaking, crushing, lifting, earth-moving and metallurgical while under engineering there is hydraulic systems, bearings and seals, survey instruments, chemicals and explosive equipment.

Last week the ZITF chairman judging from the space taken up, said they were expecting the biggest exhibition since 1997.

Nkomo said a total space of 6 485 square metres, up from 3 442 last year, had been booked. A conference running concurrently with the exhibition under the theme “Exploring Business Synergies for Growth of the Mining Industry” will also be held. An interactive workshop organised in conjunction with the Joint Suppliers’ and Purchasers’ Committee of the Chamber of Mines will be held tomorrow.

The workshop will centre on trade promotion and facilitation in the context of the mining sector and how to take the industry forward through optimising synergies as well as on strategies to harness mineral resources for the benefit of the economy.
