Former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari is likely to face a civil suit of $28 000 and criminal prosecution emanating from his botched up deals with the incarcerated Leeroy Waguta.
This was revealed Monday by Waguta’s lawyer, Andrew Mudheredhe, who was cross-examining Mwaruwari in a case where Waguta is alleged to have flouted his bail conditions by threatening Mwaruwari on his mobile.
It was not made clear in court however what deals could lead to Mwaruwari’s prosecution or how he owed Waguta the stated $28 000.
But Mwaruwari told provincial magistrate Shane Kubonera that he caused Waguta’s arrest for the second time after receiving threatening calls from him.
“He called me on my phone while hiding his identity and asked me to drop the charges. He threatened that if I was not going to comply he would go to the papers and at the same time he alleged I owed him $500 000,” Mwaruwari said. “He was threatening me as a public figure and I knew that anything little about me would be blown out of proportion hence I wanted to clear my name,” he said.
Mwaruwari said following Waguta’s threats, he read some articles in the press that had tarnishing information about him and it became apparent the threats were real.
The magistrate remanded Waguta in custody to Thursday for trial where he is expected to offer his defence on allegations of conning Mwaruwari of R100 000 and $5 000 through an alleged misrepresentation.
