A 58-year-old man from Mbembesi in Inyathi has been hauled before the courts for allegedly raping a minor whose age has not been given.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, raped the girl sometime in May this year when his wife had gone to St Luke’s Hospital in Lupane.
After the wife had left, the man arrived home and found the girl still awake, lying on the bed with other siblings who were already asleep.
He allegedly instructed the girl to follow him to his hut and the girl complied. On entering the hut, the girl found the man sitting on the bed stark naked. The man allegedly instructed her to remove her clothes as well and the girl complied.
The two went into the blankets and the man fondled the girl before raping her. A few days later the man called the same girl into his bedroom hut.
The girl found the man standing behind the door. He immediately closed the door and raped her while gagging her with his hand to stop her from screaming.
He threatened to kill the girl if she ever told anyone about the case. However, an informer tipped off the girl’s mother about the issue and a report was made to the police, leading to his arrest.
The girl was taken to St Luke’s Hospital for examination.
The man pleaded guilty to one count of rape and not guilty to the other count when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ndumo Masuku on Wednesday.
The magistrate remanded him in custody to June 20 for the continuation of trial. Malvin Nzombe appeared for the State.
