MUTARE — A machete-wielding Mutare man stirred drama in Chikanga suburb on Monday after he went beserk and attacked his brother with a machete as he chased his family members from their home in broad daylight.

David Chirumhanzu (31) appeared before a Mutare magistrate yesterday facing attempted murder charges.

His brother, Maxwell, was saved by the timely intervention of the police and is battling for his life at Mutare Provincial Hospital with serious neck and back machete wounds.

David was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Fabien Feshete.

It is alleged that on the fateful day, Maxwell was weeding the family garden in Chikanga while talking to his sister Beulah.

David allegedly suddenly turned violent and started shouting at his sister ordering her to vacate their house together with all other family members.

It is further alleged that David went into the house, took a machete and chased after his sister who luckily escaped to safety after she outpaced him.

David then turned on his elder brother who had locked himself inside the house. The accused pounded the door with a machete threatening to kill all family members.

Fearing for his life, Maxwell jumped out of the house through the window, but the accused spotted and pursued him.

He allegedly struck his brother on the shoulder and neck, leaving him for dead.

Police who happened to be in the area intervened and arrested David.

He was remanded in custody to June 27 and was told to apply for bail at the High Court. Lloyd Kurehwatira prosecuted.
