Former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari was allegedly swindled of R100 000 and $5 000 by a Harare man, Leeroy Waguta through an alleged misrepresentation.

Waguta (25) who resides in Zimre Park, Ruwa, was arrested on Monday this week and charged with fraud following a police report by Mwaruwari.

It is alleged sometime in November last year, Waguta approached Mwaruwari’s friend, whose name was not indicated in State papers, and allegedly misrepresented to him that Mwaruwari had asked him to collect $5 000.

However, it was not pointed out how Mwaruwari was connected to the unnamed friend, but when Waguta got the cash from him, he allegedly disappeared. It is also alleged that between August and November last year, Waguta also swindled Mwaruwari of R100 000 after he allegedly misrepresented to his lawyers in South Africa that Mwaruwari had instructed him to get cash from them.

Waguta is said to have sent an electronic message to Mwaruwari’s legal team which administers his finance and properties in South Africa and instructed them to transfer cash into his account in Zimbabwe.

Waguta’s luck is said to have run out when Mwaruwari was approached by his friend demanding his cash back.

It is alleged Mwaruwari professed ignorance of the alleged transaction and a report was made to the police. Mwaruwari was also advised by his South African lawyers that Waguta requested cash from them in his name.

Waguta was not asked to plead when he appeared yesterday before provincial magistrate Shane Kubonera on a fraud charge.

He was remanded to June 23 on $100 bail and ordered to surrender his passport.

Vernancia Mtake appeared for the State.
