Katlego Mphela still thinks he can overtake Kaizer Chiefs’ Knowledge Musona and finish as the Premier Soccer League (PSL) top scorer for a second successive season.

The 26-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns striker is on 12 goals, one behind Musona as the season nears its climax. And despite missing a penalty in The Brazilians’ thrilling 4-4 draw against Ajax Cape Town on April 6, “Killer” has vowed to fight until the end to ensure he comes out on top.

“Musona’s very good when things are going well but is he really consistent? I don’t know. We’ll see, but I just have to keep scoring and push him right until the end,” says Mphela.

“Everybody has been saying that he is better than me but he has played more games and only scored one more goal. There was a time when I was on five and he was on 10, so coming back from one behind now won’t be hard – if I score two goals in a match again then I’ll be on top.”

But with the PSL’s decision to reschedule the postponed match against AmaZulu for May 4, Mphela will now have to wait until the showdown with his chief rival and Kaizer Chiefs three days earlier for his next chance to add to his tally.

Whatever happens, both players are likely to miss out to Ajax Cape Town’s Thulani Serero when the PSL Player of the Season award is announced, although Mphela thinks any decision should wait until the destination of the league title is known.

He says: “For me, it should go to a player from the team that wins the League. A lot of players have done well this season – at Pirates there are three or four who could win it.

“People have been mentioning Serero because he has done so well for Ajax and is even scoring goals, so if they win the League I would give it to him.

But there’s lots of other people who could deserve it as well.”
