American student Augusta Clare has been included in the Zimbabwe girls’ team for the Zone Six Under-16 championships set for Zambia this weekend.

The zonal qualifiers run from April 8 to 15 in Lusaka. Clare, who is a student at Harare International School, is part of the girls’ team that is being coached by Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu.

BUZ administrator Simon Lawson said Federation of International Basketball Association (Fiba) allows associations to use foreign nationals studying in their countries at junior level.

“At junior level FIBA allows the use of foreign nationals. However, that is not the same case at senior team level,” he said.

He added that both sets of teams are already in camp in preparation of this event.

“The coaches have already begun working with the players and I am hopeful of posting a positive result,” he said.

The Zimbabweans will however, have to be at their best as continental heavyweights Mozambique and Angola are also gunning for the single slot reserved for the region.

The boys’ team will be coached by Laddie Munetsi who would be assisted by Erinos Katsaruware. Ndlovu would coach the girls’ team and is set to be assisted by Vivian Vareta.

Countries expected to participate in the tournament includes South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe and the hosts Zambia.

The winner of the zonal competition qualifies for next year’s Under 17 Afro Basket whose venue is still to be decided.

Zimbabwe has never qualified for this competition, but will this time be hoping for a change of fortunes. Teams
