A private school in Domboshava on the outskirts of Harare has built an incinerator to safely manage menstrual waste and promote hygienic practices.

Officials from Makumbe Hilltop College revealed as the institution celebrated the International Menstrual Hygiene Day to raise awareness against menstruation stigma.

Makumbe Hilltop College co-director Eva Mutizwa urged other stakeholders to address the stigma associated with menstruation.

The Menstrual hygiene day commemorations ran under the theme ‘periodfriendlyworld’.

"We recognized the challenges girls face during their menstrual cycles, and we wanted to provide a safe and dignified way for them to manage their hygiene,” Mutizwa said.

"By prioritizing menstrual hygiene, we are not only improving health and wellbeing, but also empowering our students to reach their full potential.”

Mutizwa said they constructed an incinerator to burn the used sanitary wear.

"Discussing menstruation was once a taboo topic, but times have changed. With a growing population of girls, we prioritize creating a safe and supportive environment where they feel encouraged to openly discuss issues affecting them,” she said.

“By constructing an incinerator, we aim to reduce the stigma and discomfort associated with menstrual waste disposal, and create a healthier and more supportive environment for our students.”
