In papers filed at the High Court last month, Ronald Chandler and his wife Elizabeth claimed the politician owed them £400 000 (about $709 324) for an immovable property located at 20 Lingnell Close, Quinnington, in Harare.

The couple said Nyabadza only paid $127 000 since he took possession of the property in 2003 and had reneged on paying the balance, although he allegedly acknowledged his indebtedness.

The property was valued at £850 000.

Part of the couple’s application reads: “On or about June 29, 2003, the parties entered into an agreement in terms of which defendant (Nyabadza) agreed to purchase from plaintiffs (Ronald and Elizabeth) for the sum of £850 000 an immovable property known as 20 Lingnell Close, Quinnington, together with their entire shareholdings in the following companies, Cole and Chandler Agencies, Interchem Limited, Enterprise Bookshop Limited.”

Through their lawyers Venturas and Samukange, the Chandlers said in June 2010, they varied the agreement of sale to exclude the immovable property, an aircraft and various other movable items and reduced the value of the remaining property to £548 000.

“In terms of the agreement, defendant was to pay a deposit of £100 000 on October 10, 2003 and instalments of £50 000 at three monthly intervals thereafter, the final instalment being due on March 31, 2006,” the Chandlers said.

“In breach of the agreement, defendant has paid only $127 147 in discharge of the purchase price in the amounts and on the dates set out in the schedule amounting to £82 350 leaving a balance outstanding of £465 650.”

Nyabadza is board chairman of the Agricultural Rural Development Authority and recently contested in the Zanu PF primary elections.

He lost to Justice minister Patrick Chinamasa in Makoni Central Constituency.
