Sanyatwe tipped for elevation amid Zanu PF jostling

Former army commander Anselem Sanyatwe is tipped for a Zanu PF central committee position in Nyanga as jostling for the post gathers steam.

The jostling for the post follows the suspension of Nyanga constituency central committee member Moses Gutu recently.

Gutu was accused of rebelling against the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed into law last week.

He was suspended after the Manicaland provincial executive council (PEC) recommended disciplinary action against him for allegedly violating Article 27 of the party constitution.

Gutu is accused of mobilising lower party structures against the amendment bill.

Videos of him denouncing the bill have since gone viral on social media, prompting the PEC to recommend his suspension pending a disciplinary hearing.

His case is set to be heard before the party's national disciplinary committee in Harare, with many members anticipating his eventual expulsion.

However, his suspension pending disciplinary hearing has sparked fierce backside jostling for his post.

It has since emerged that Sanyatwe is the frontrunner to be elected to fill the vacancy.

This is not the first time his name has been floated for a central committee post.

He was previously tipped for a central committee slot to replace Dorothy Mabika, the Zanu PF Manicaland Women's League boss.

Mabika was eventually replaced by Mnangagwa's advisor, Paul Tungwarara, after a directive that her successor should come from Chipinge.

Sources in the ruling party told The Standard yesterday that Sanyatwe, who hails from Nyanga, is the most senior figure to take up the position.

"Following the suspension of Gutu, the matter is going to the national disciplinary committee in Harare, but we are aware that there is canvassing for support for Anselem Sanyatwe to replace Gutu," said an insider in Manicaland.

"Sanyatwe is the most senior member in Nyanga and is a favourite to take up the position.”
