ZiG downs Zimra system

Zimra press officer Gladman Njanji said he would revert back to Southern Eye two days ago following enquiries about the glitch.

A ZIMBABWE Revenue Authority (Zimra)’s electronic application used to register imported motor vehicles has been down since the Introduction of the new Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency, NewsDay Weekender has established.

This has resulted in hundreds of imported vehicles not being registered, inconveniencing the importers.

Zimra press officer Gladman Njanji said he would revert back to Southern Eye two days ago following enquiries about the glitch.

"Good day, I will revert," he said when questions were sent Tuesday.

Njani, however, did not revert back with answers.

After processing vehicle imports Zimra issues an "equipment number" generated by its system linked online to the Central Vehicle Registry and Vehicle Theft Squad facilitating registration of the cars. The system is, however, failing to generate the equipment number since the introduction of the new currency, according to well-placed sources.

Some vehicle importers said the development is worrying since some of them cannot use their unregistered vehicles for cross-border trips.

"Besides, it creates space for criminals who can use unregistered vehicles to avoid detection. It is something that must quickly be solved, but no one is looking at problems they are creating,” said a shipping agent who asked not to be named.

Zimbabwe introduced the ZiG currency in early April with authorities saying it is backed by gold, foreign currecny and other minerals.
