Local authorities convention kicks off

THE Local Authorities Convention, which brings together industry leaders, experts, innovators, and local authorities across the country, kicks off in Masvingo today.

It is running under the theme: Accountability, service delivery excellence and innovation within local authorities.

The chief executive officer of City of Windhoek, Moses Matyayi, will give the keynote address at the annual conference organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (Icaz).

Matyayi, who assumed office as the CEO on August 1, 2023, brings a wealth of experience in public service, business administration and leadership.

He is a servant leader passionate about corporate governance matters especially in the local government sector in which he has spent more than 15 years.

The two-day event will bring together industry leaders, experts, innovators and local authorities across the country to explore the latest developments, share insights and shape the future of local authorities in the country.

Some delegates expected at the event include the Local Government and Public Works minister Winston Chitando, the acting Auditor-General, Rheah Kujinga, and the past president of Icaz, Duduzile Shinya.

Other presenters include the acting town clerk of the Mutare City Council Kapuya Blessing Chafesuka, founder of the Bullion Group International, Persistence Gwanyanya, the chief executive officer of Securities and Exchange Commissions of Zimbabwe, Anymore Taruvinga, and the former deputy minister of Finance and Economic Development, Clemence Chiduwa.

This convention serves as the premier event for local leaders to connect, collaborate and shape the future of Zimbabwe’s communities.

Local authorities are a key pillar of governance in Zimbabwe. Their operations and services affect the lives of ordinary citizens more than central government as services such as water provision, road maintenance, primary healthcare, garbage collection, and vehicle parking are among many of the primary responsibilities of the local authorities.
