DVD Shop Sessions hits 26-episode milestone in Harare

There is something special about watching musicians perform in unconventional spaces. American broadcaster Bob Boilen proved this when he created the beloved Tiny Desk concerts, transforming a cluttered office at National Public Radio in Washington into an iconic performance stage.

Now, a similar magic is unfolding in Harare at what is believed to be the city’s last remaining DVD shop.

DVD Shop Sessions, established in December 2025, has reached a major milestone after releasing 26 consecutive episodes on schedule.

“In broadcast television terms, that is a full season,” read a statement released last week.

Artists who have featured on the platform include Vera, Skai, Gilmo, Ulenni OkaNdlovu, Bhanshee, Hooksmith, Randall Tagwireyi, Nasibo and Tadana Nakai, among others.

Looking ahead, the next expected feature is an electric performance by multi-talented rapper Paintafresco, promising to bring even more energy to the intimate DVD shop stage.

For the team behind the platform, the achievement marks six months of consistency since the show’s debut.

Recorded at Showtime Home Video, the series brings together film enthusiasts and music lovers through stripped-down live performances and artist conversations. Much like Tiny Desk concerts, DVD Shop Sessions proves that atmosphere matters far more than arena size.

“Each episode features a special guest artist. The format includes a brief, light-hearted interview exploring the musician’s creative journey, upcoming projects, and thoughts on classic and contemporary films. The conversation then gives way to a live performance, allowing artists to connect directly with digital audiences through their music alone,” read the statement.

“DVD Shop Sessions is not formally categorised into seasons, but reaching this milestone after six months shows the momentum we have maintained since December,” a spokesperson explained.

The creator and host of the show is VI The Law, a multi-award-winning artist and sound engineer.

Speaking on the achievement, he said:

“We thank everyone who has been watching and sharing DVD Shop Sessions. It means a lot, not only to us, the crew, but also to our amazing guests, who we also thank for trusting us with their amazing work and allowing us to share it with the world.

“We are not planning on stopping any time soon, so join us every Thursday afternoon for a celebration of music and film through an authentic Zimbabwean lens.”

The crew has pledged to continue releasing weekly episodes while platforming both emerging and established artists across all genres, with ambitions of turning DVD Shop Sessions into a key destination for discovering Zimbabwean music and creative talent.
