Yaya Saru drops soulful love single

Speaking to Standard Style, the singer revealed that the track is deeply rooted in personal experience, inspired by moments where love feels perfect—even if fleeting.

Harare-based Afro-fusion artist Yaya Saru, born Memory Chinamasa, has released a new love single titled Don’t Wake Me Up, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into her emotional and artistic evolution.

Speaking to Standard Style, the singer revealed that the track is deeply rooted in personal experience, inspired by moments where love feels perfect—even if fleeting.

“The title Don’t Wake Me Up is definitely rooted in personal emotion. It comes from that space where something feels so real and so perfect, even if it might not be permanent,” she said.

The song captures themes of escapism, vulnerability, and the desire to hold onto moments of peace and emotional safety. Blending storytelling with lived experience, Yaya Saru describes the track as both honest and reflective.

“It’s about wanting to stay in a moment that brings you peace,” she added.

Having spent years developing her sound, the artist says the new release marks a defining step in her musical journey.

“This single is an important step because it really defines my sound and direction. It’s more intentional, more honest, and it’s setting the tone for what’s coming next,” she explained.

Yaya Saru noted that the songwriting process was organic and emotionally driven, allowing her to explore a new level of vulnerability.

“I didn’t overthink it—I just let it flow. It pushed me into a slightly new direction, especially in how I express vulnerability in my music.”

She hopes listeners will connect with the song in their own unique ways.

“Whether it reminds them of love, loss, or just a moment they never wanted to end—I want it to feel personal to them.”

Reflecting on the recording process, she highlighted special moments where everything aligned naturally.

“There was a moment when everything just clicked—the vocals, the emotion, the energy in the room. Those are the moments you can’t plan.”

Far from being a standalone release, Don’t Wake Me Up is part of a broader project the artist is currently working on, with more music expected this year, possibly in the form of an EP.

The single is now available on her YouTube platform, with the artist encouraging fans to follow her on social media and streaming platforms for updates on upcoming releases.
