Businessman and former karate world champion Kuda Mutenda defied learning abilities to work for some of the world’s biggest brands and now has penned a book about his inspirational journey.
Mutenda grew up in Mufakose, one of Harare’s oldest high-density suburbs, and did his tertiary education in Japan where he became fluent in Japanese.
He obtained two masters degrees in International Peace and Security, becoming the first ever student to finish a two-year programme from Sophia University within a year.
Mutenda worked for Daimler AG in Japan, India, Germany, Brazil, Kenya and Dubai, covering various senior functions in life cycle management, sales and marketing as well as procurement, after sales and global strategy.

He returned home seven years ago as founder and managing director of Mwana Group Pvt Ltd, a company that manufactures automotive filters under the Mwana Filters brand.
His new 488-page book titled My Life Overcoming – Kukunda, has been described as a remarkable story of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination.
Tapiwa Marvin Mapunde, who wrote the foreword, said Mutenda’s journey reflected the challenges faced by Zimbabwe, a country with a complex history of independence struggles and economic hardships.
Mapunde said the book showed how individual qualities can lead to international success despite adversity.
“Kuda’s story highlights the importance of core virtues such as integrity, grit, and self-belief,” he wrote.
“These principles serve as the foundation for overcoming obstacles and reaching significant milestones.
“The book aims to motivate young readers by illustrating that moral integrity and steadfast resolve are essential for transcending difficult circumstances and contributing meaningfully to Zimbabwe's development on a global scale.”
Mapunde said a central theme in Mutenda’s success was his dedication and relentless work ethic.
“Rising from modest beginnings, he embodies altruism through acts of kindness and active participation in charity work,” he wrote.
“His efforts promote social cohesion and serve as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and future leaders to foster positive economic change.
“The story also highlights the significance of education and cultural adaptability.”
He noted that the businessman’s experiences within Zimbabwe's educational system and his transition into Japanese academic and business environments demonstrated resilience, a positive attitude, and optimism.
“These qualities are vital in navigating the complexities of a dynamic global economy and adapting to diverse cultural contexts,” Mapunde added.
“Readers are provided with unapologetically candid insights into Kuda's personal struggles and growth, emphasising his unwavering commitment to his core values amidst various challenges.
“His journey serves as a powerful example of authenticity and perseverance, encouraging individuals to remain true to themselves and their principles.”
Designed as a practical guide for young people, the book illustrates that success is rooted in perseverance, integrity, and a genuine desire to serve others.
It also emphasises effective leadership qualities and offers strategic guidance for personal and professional development, particularly in advancing Zimbabwe’s economy and fostering sustainable growth.
“Overall, this book serves as a beacon for aspiring leaders in Zimbabwe and across Africa, demonstrating that with determination and integrity, individuals can overcome adversity and make a lasting impact,” Mapunde said.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed Kuda’s story and wish him every success in the future. I recommend this book with confidence.”
