River Valley extends lifeline to vulnerable with free healthcare initiative

Beneficiaries of the River Valley Group's corporate social responsibility programme

In a moving show of compassion that left many in tears, River Valley Group of Companies chief executive officer Smelly Dube and her husband, Mncedisi Dube, have unveiled a free medical treatment programme targeting underprivileged communities in Gweru.

The announcement was made during a pre-Christmas celebration that brought together more than 100 beneficiaries, including people living with disabilities, the elderly and other vulnerable members of society.

The event blended festivity with purpose, underscoring the family’s long-standing commitment to social responsibility.

Renowned Gweru medical practitioner Shakespeare Mureyani has been appointed to oversee the medical assistance programme.

Addressing attendees, he shared practical wellness tips and guidance on identifying early signs of illness.

“On behalf of River Valley Properties, it is vital to support one another as a family whenever you are unwell. If you face a medical issue, feel free to approach the RVP offices, and we will arrange for the necessary check-up,” Mureyani stated while addressing the gathering.

Group chairperson Dube said supporting the less privileged during the festive season had become a core tradition of the company, adding that this year’s intervention took a more deliberate health-focused approach.

“As the RVP family we have planned for you free medical assistance in 2026, it is crucial to ensure you maintain good health,” he said.

Dube noted that while the provision of medical support to the underprivileged was not a new initiative — with several elderly people having benefited in previous years — the programme would be expanded in 2026 to reach a wider population.

Beyond healthcare, the celebration also saw beneficiaries receiving grocery hampers, live chickens, food, airtime and cash, providing immediate relief during the festive period.

“We will also donate to all widows in Shurugwi and 40 orphans before continuing to Chachacha and Mberegwa to extend the same programme of assistance to the less privileged,” Smelly said.

Through the S&M Hand of Compassion (HOC) initiative, River Valley Group has over the years supported thousands of people with food aid, medical assistance, school fees and financial support, cementing its reputation as a pillar of hope for vulnerable communities across the region.
