KHAYA Arts is set to stage its production — Ngomdladla é Dunamis which was nominated in this year’s National Arts and Merits Awards (Namas).
The gumboot dance production will have its second appearance at the Bulawayo Theatre on April 23.
Khaya Arts director, Future Dube confirmed the development to Standard Style yesterday.
“This is the production which was nominated at the Namas this year and it's the same production which had the best female dancer and choreographer nominees as well," he said.
“So, we are bringing it back for the second time at the theatre. It's the ZITF period and we want to bring entertainment to those who would have visited the City of Kings and Queens including foreigners if possible.”
Dube said the gumboot dance is slowly phasing out and the production tries to revive it.
“This a gumboot dance production that carries a story which wasn't told before. It tells a story of women who were left behind by their husbands who went to the mine to work but never came back,” he said.
“The gumboot dance is slowly getting extinct so we are trying to revive it. We want to preserve it for the next generation to come.
“Ngomdladla means with power or energy and Dunamis is a Greek word meaning extra exploding power therefore we are saying come and watch a high energetic production that will take your breath away.”
Dube added that they will do a professional video shoot of the production and use the footage to reach a wider audience in and outside Zimbabwe.
