When legendary African heavyweight champion Proud “Kilimanjaro” Chinembiri passed on in the early 90s, Amos Motsi was still a toddler.

Three decades after the death of the renowned boxer, Motsi, fits the stature of Chinembiri and has been nicknamed after him.

With a weight of 115Kg, the 32-year old Rusape-based boxer is set to carry on the legacy of the former Africa Heavyweight champion.

It is the reincarnation of the later boxer

“The late Kilimanjaro is my role model and I want to follow in his footsteps

“It is my wish to carry on his legacy,” said Motsi.

Nicknamed Kirimanjaro, Motsi who is still an amateur boxer who is poised to turn professional later this year harbors the ambitions of being a national and international champion.

“I just do not want to be a heavyweight boxer but to fill in the shoes of Chinembiri and become national and international heavyweight champion,” said Kirimanjaro.

Motsi is expected to turn pro in August with a scheduled fight against Simon Madanhire in a deal which is being organised by Clyde Musonda.

“I am looking forward to turning professional later this year.

“I believe I am ready to and prepared for the big stage,” he said.

As he looks forward to turning pro, Motsi is worried by the decline in numbers of heavyweight boxers.

“I am happy that a match has been organised and what is worrying is that currently in the country we have few professional heavyweight boxers and it has been difficult to get a fixed fight with heavyweight boxers,” said Kirimanjaro.

Zimbabwe currently has four known heavyweight boxers.

Kirimanjaro, who has won several fights in the amateur category, revealed that he was also on a mission to give limelight to heavyweight boxing.

“Like I said the numbers of heavyweight boxers in the country are falling but it is my dream to bring back the good days of heavyweight boxing,” he said.

A renowned boxer who has won several titles as an amateur, the 32-year old heavyweight boxer added another accolade to his collection when he won a silver medal at the Nelson Mandela Boxing Challenge which was held in south Africa.
