Mahachi not ready for quick football return

BELEAGUERED Zimbabwe international winger Kudakwashe Mahachi is taking time to work on his fitness before he can commit to any club as a number of teams are reportedly jostling for his signature.

Mahachi is looking to put behind a protracted legal battle to clear his name after he was accused of attempting to end his 4-year-old son’s life on two separate occasions.

The footballer was acquitted after the state failed to prove the essential elements of the case while the evidence given by the witnesses was contradictory and disjointed.

The case nearly cost him his football career as his DSTV Premier League side Supersport United decided against renewing his contract at the club.

But Mahachi was cleared of any wrongdoing back in November thus giving him any opportunity to restart his career.

The 29-year-old footballer was recently linked with a move to South Africa topflight league side Maritzburg United, a club he has been training with.

His agent Gibson Mahachi revealed that they have received some offers for the player, but are not in a hurry to sign any deal.

“He has been training with DStv Premiership side Maritzburg United, but that is primarily for him to gain full fitness. We all know that he has not been playing for a very long time. He needs to be fully fit before committing to any club,” he told FarPost.

“Honestly, we have offers, but because of the situation, we are not in a hurry to conclude anything because the player is our priority.

“The window is open; he is a free agent, so he can join a club which we feel is the best for him to revive his career with less pressure. Offers are there but regaining fitness is the priority. So, first things first,” added the agent.

According to Mahachi, it is now unlikely that he will sign any deal in the January window and is probably aiming for the start of the 2023/2024 season.

Having played for Chicken Inn and Highlanders on the local scene, Mahachi moved to South Africa to join giants Mamelodi Sundowns and has also played for Golden Arrows as well as Orlando Pirates.

Mahachi has been a permanent feature of the Warriors squad in recent years and has been to three Afcon finals with the national team.
