Marketplace day boost trade for women entrepreneurs

Ecobank’s Ellevate Programme is set to elevate women’s entrepreneurship in Zimbabwe as the bank prepares for its Women’s Marketplace Day this Saturday.

As one of Africa’s leading pan-African banks, Ecobank continues to drive financial inclusion and empowerment through its Ellevate Programme—an initiative designed to promote entrepreneurship, productivity, and excellence among women-owned and women-led businesses.

In Zimbabwe, this commitment comes to life through the Women’s Marketplace Day, scheduled for Saturday at the Ecobank Headquarters in Borrowdale, Harare, in partnership with the Organisation of Women in International Trade (OWIT) Zimbabwe.

Held in celebration of International Women’s Month, the event is designed not just as a celebration, but as a practical, market-driven platform for women in business.

“This initiative is the third edition of a noble programme that has already gained momentum after successful marketplace days held in Harare and Bulawayo in 2024,” Ecobank Zimbabwe managing director Moses Kurenjekwa said.

“The event is open to the public and is intentionally structured to enable women entrepreneurs to connect directly with customers, buyers, and potential partners who can turn ideas into sustainable business growth.”

Nearly 200 exhibitors are expected to participate, showcasing a diverse range of products and services. The event is also set to attract hundreds of buyers, making it a high-impact commercial platform where real sales opportunities can be realised.

Kurenjekwa urged members of the public to support the initiative through active participation.

“I urge buyers and members of the public to come in their numbers to support the women. The success and impact of the marketplace model depends on customer participation,” he said.

OWIT Zimbabwe also welcomed the initiative, describing it as a critical platform for advancing women in enterprise and trade.

“OWIT Zimbabwe commends Ecobank for funding this vital initiative,” said OWIT Zimbabwe President Buhlebenkosi Ostlea Nyathi.

“It aligns with our vision to promote excellence and international trade among women, while creating opportunities for them to showcase their products and connect with broader markets.”

Nyathi added that the partnership continues to grow following a similar successful initiative held in 2024.

“We are pleased that this collaboration has continued to strengthen, and we commend the sustained momentum in supporting women entrepreneurs,” she said.

At the heart of the event is the opportunity for women entrepreneurs to exhibit and sell their products to a wide and diverse audience.

“Exhibition is free, and attendance is also free. We encourage women entrepreneurs to seize this opportunity to showcase and sell their products and services,” Kurenjekwa said.

Beyond sales, the marketplace is expected to serve as a platform for knowledge sharing and networking.

“The event also provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to learn from each other through the exchange of ideas and experiences. Whether you are already in business or planning to start, this is a space to learn and be inspired,” he said.

The initiative reflects a broader approach to empowerment that goes beyond visibility.

“Our Ellevate Programme has been instrumental in helping women gain access to essential resources, training, and networks that can significantly boost their businesses,” Kurenjekwa said.

With growing momentum and strong partnerships, this year’s edition is expected to deliver meaningful outcomes for women entrepreneurs.

The Women’s Marketplace Day will run from 10am to 5pm, with organisers calling on Zimbabweans to attend in large numbers and actively support women-led businesses.
