Holy Ten was arrested on allegations of rape last week.
The question I want to ask is: Why would a popular artist who is surrounded by many fans, including girls, want to rape a 14-year-old school girl? Only Holy Ten has the answer to this.
Mukudzei Modecay Chitsama (born November 18 1998), known professionally as Holy Ten, is a Zimbabwean hip-hop artist, songwriter and music producer, nicknamed “Mujaya” or “Ba Ju” by his fans.
Holy Ten rose to prominence in late 2010 with socially conscious hip-hop that speaks to the struggles of young Zimbabweans.
He is known for his deep voice, incisive social commentary and hit songs such as Ndaremerwa, Violence, Ko Makuitasei and Hoo Zvangu as well as the albums Suicide Notes, Risky Life, Energy, The New Bhundu Boyz and Risky Life 2.
Holy Ten has been one of the most influential and controversial figures in contemporary Zimbabwean hip hop, attracting both critical acclaim and public criticism for his music, public statements and political positioning.
I have been observing this young man from the time he rose to fame.
His music career has been marred by a lot of controversies and since then I have noticed that he needs help..

I will try and list four of the controversial happenings which this young rapper has been involved in, causing industry feuds:
- 1. He has declared himself a better star than Winky D and Jah Prayzah without proving it. Can he alone fill up the HICC? Winky D and Jah Prayzah can.
- 2. His ongoing beefs with fellow artists like Voltz JT and R Peels, as well as his very public rants on social media and award show snubs.have destroyed his artistic reputation.
- Holy Ten's collaboration with Winky D on the politically charged track Ibotso rattled Zimbabwean authorities, making both artistes central figures in the debate. Holy Ten later verbally withdrew his involvement and claimed that he was tricked into participating. And,
- 4. He has had public meltdowns, ego, and controversial statements which sometimes overshadow his actual musical craft.
In addition, he was arrested on allegations of rape of a 14-year-old school girl last week.
I repeat: Why would a popular artist be accused of committing rape during his peak against a teenage girl when he is surrounded by hundreds of admiring fans who include girls of his age?
I do not have the answer for the question I have asked above as I do not have enough information about Holy Ten’s background.
However, research on similar incidents has shown that it is those men who have had childhood trauma, adverse events in their upbringing, an absent father, being raised without parents, exposure to criminal or violent behaviour, physical abuse, sexual abuse and poverty, and who need to show how ‘important they are’ who end up subjecting women to committing sex by force and without consent.
Much research has attempted to understand why adults perpetrate child sexual abuse, but few studies have adopted the exploratory-inductive approach that allows perpetrators to freely account for their actions.
I am yet to come across other musicians who have been accused of raping young girls. Holy Ten’s case is unusual. If a situation of this nature was ubiquitous, we would organise workshops on how this can be prevented.
In policy terms, this underscores the importance of efforts to combat misogyny, male sexual entitlement and patriarchal privilege; and the need to strengthen consent education.
