THE ongoing Shoko Festival tomorrow takes netizens through an exciting virtual experience as controversial politician and president of Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) party, Linda Masarira will be grilled by artists at the Shoko Roast, When Arts Meet Politics show.

Masarira will be grilled by top comedians Doc Vikela, Admire “Bhutisi” Kuzhangaira and Kaden, filmmaker Joe Njagu, Munya Noble Stylz, and Charmaine Mujeri under the Simuka Comedy banner.

Festival director Farai “Comrade Fatso” Munroe on Monday said the fiesta would take people through an exciting virtual journey.

“On Thursday (tomorrow), LEAD president Linda Masarira will be hosted by comedians under the banner Simuka Comedy. She is going to be grilled and she will grill them back,” he said.

“It will be an interesting way of bringing humour to hold politicians accountable. We tried to think about controversial politicians.”

Masarira, a former MDC-T spokesperson, told NewsDay Life & Style that there was need for more shows that would hold politicians to account.

“As a leader, you have to be reachable and accessible to all because leadership is all about connecting with the grassroots. I connect with them as they roast me.  I get a chance to interact and sell the LEAD ideology through the arts industry,” she said.

“We need more shows of that nature to see the other side of leaders who aspire for public office. Obvious comedians touch on controversial issues in a sarcastic manner. That is the roasting part of the show.”

The festival has several other programmes that bring leaders to account.

Yesterday, the virtual Mayor’s Forum featured Mutare mayor Blessing Tandi, Chitungwiza mayor Lovemore Maiko, Kadoma mayor Action Nyamukondiwa and Norton’s Sylvester Gumisirai as guests.

Another programme How Can We Make Town House Work for the Residents featured former Harare mayor Hebert Gomba and suspended mayor Jacob Mafume.

Part of the Friday programme includes an investigative journalism masterclass to be hosted by journalist Dumisani Muleya.

The festival, considered as the country’s biggest urban culture jubilee, roared into life on Monday under the theme: Shoko Universe and will end on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in Bulawayo, arts fanatics are in for a treat as Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo which kicked off yesterday with the Monetising the Arts Through Social Media workshop at the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo and the Filmmaking Masterclass.

The official opening show was scheduled for 1800hrs at the Bulawayo Theatre featuring an array of artistes, among them Bulawayo songstress Mimmie Tarukwana, Thandy Dhlana, dancehall singer Tocky Vibes, rapper Tashamiswa, Voltz JT, Jungle Locco, Gze and Lady Bee, among others.

Intwasa, which will be held both physically and virtually, will close down on Saturday.
