TRIATHLON Zimbabwe (TZ)’s up-and-coming athletes, Callum Smith and Rohnan Nicholson, on Tuesday left for the youth category of the Africa Championships scheduled for Hurghada, Egypt. The duo will battle it out on Friday against athletes from South Africa and Libya among the confirmed list so far in the beach resort town.

TZ head coach Pam Fulton said this small team of two athletes has been training hard during the off-season leading up to the Hurghada event.

“The qualification criteria were based on their results at the South Africa Championships and our Troutbeck event, earlier this year. Unfortunately, the older athletes who qualified to travel are in the process of writing exams and are unable to travel,” Fulton told NewsDay Sport.

“They both qualified to compete in the Youth U15 event last year and they travelled to Africa Championships in Agadir, Morocco. This year they are both top of the U15 category age wise.

“There are 18 athletes on the start list from Egypt, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Morocco and Libya. I expect some very close and competitive racing on Friday.

“Both Rohnan and Callums’ strengths are on the bike and running, so I expect a strong finish from both of them.”
