SOUTHERNS and Lady Chevrons star batter Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano dazzled Old Hararians Sports Club in the capital with the first century of the Women Regionals One Day competition on Monday, hitting 110 from 111 deliveries before she was clean bowled by Northens’ speed merchant, Nomvelo Sibanda.
Her dismissal on the unlucky ‘Nelson’ score, 111, opened floodgates for her teammates’ successive falls for a measly six runs for the last six wickets as Southerns fell from a position of authority, 189/4 chasing Northerns’ 217/8.
In the end, Mugeri was on the losing end as Southerns uncharacteristically ended their run chase at 195 all out inside 37.5 overs.
Nelson’s score is widely considered to be an unlucky score in cricket as it is believed that 111 score looks like a wicket without bails.
Northerns’ 18-year-old medium fast bowler Mitchel Mavunga claimed three wickets inside one over to wrest the match from the jaws of defeat, while Kelis Nldovu and Sibanda claimed two wickets and a single scalp respectively in the onslaught. Northerns won the encounter by 22 runs as they followed up on an earlier nine-wicket win against the same opposition in a two-day match that ended on Sunday.
Other star performers included Northerns all-rounder Tasmeen Granger who top-scored with an unbeaten 53, Mary-Anne Musonda scored 46, while the Southerns’ dup of Loreen Tshuma and Loryn Phiri picked three wickets apiece.
Meanwhile, OH hosts a double header encounter today with the women’s teams tussling in the second One Dayer while the men’s premier domestic club cricket competition, the National Premier League sees Westside from Mutare hosts Kadoma Cricket Club.
Defending champions Gladiators Cricket Club from Chitungwiza are on course to retain their crown as they are yet to lose a match after 10 successful outings. They have amassed 100 points. Takashinga 2, with eight wins and two defeats, sit in second place with 86 points, while their sister club, Takashinga 1 are in third with 80 points.
